Gobius Malabaricus

Specimen of Gobius malabaricus , collected from Karavanoor river, Thrissur

The freshwater fish rediscovered from Thrissur after 150 years, was supposed to extinct.

This was funded by Mr. Mathew Plamootil, Department of Zoology, Government college Chavara, Kollam.

Mr. Mathew  published this in the Journal of Zoological Researchers.
In it he establishes that this species can be synonimised with Stenogobius macropterus

This species was found out on 1865 by British scientist Francis Day from the karavanoor river and named it as    Gobius malabaricus.

No specimen was retrieved till now and the zoologist are in a conclusion that the species might be extinct in its natural habitat.


The fish looks very beautiful. It is brownish yellow having vertical strips on the body. Its fins having black sports which is brown in colour. A peculiar black crescent mark is present at the base of the dorsal fin, which is bordered by black and white bands.

The four specimens collected by Mr. Mathew is deposited at the museum of Zoological survey of India situated at Chennai
